Plymouth Labour Manifesto
Plymouth Labour Manifesto

Time after time the people of Plymouth were telling us “this Conservative-run Council can’t seem to get the basic services right.” Who could disagree?

Roadworks on our major arterial routes seem to be never-ending. Yet work on residential streets and pavements never gets started. The chaos of the ill-planned fortnightly bin collections, where the elderly and infirm are left to struggle with much heavier bins. Fly tipping is up. In the summer, the air is thick with smells from uncollected waste. And street drains are clogged with leaves and rubbish from unswept streets.

The Conservatives have failed the most vulnerable. They have kept families with children living in bed and breakfast accommodation, at great cost to the council and greater cost to the lives of the children enduring it. There’s not enough rented housing being built.

It’s just not good enough, when people are seeing their council tax bills leap by record amounts over the last two years. The Conservatives cost you more, and for that you get less. On May 3rd you’ll get the chance to vote for a Labour council that can get the basics right, and run services efficiently and well. That’s the least taxpayers should expect. But we offer much more than that.

We will get housebuilding for rent going again, including more bungalows. We’ll build new factories to attract new jobs to the city. We’ll fight for our traditions, like the navy, army, defence and the dockyard. We’ll campaign for free parking at Derriford Hospital. We’ll keep the pressure on Government to fund better rail, road and air links.

In our 2018 manifesto we present 100 pledges that our city and its people need and deserve. Based on what you’ve told us these are the top priorities for action:

  • 1,000 new car parking spaces across Plymouth
  • New low-cost rented housing for older people (including bungalows), veterans, single people, disabled residents and to tackle homelessness
  • More CCTV on housing estates to tackle anti-social behavior
  • An end to fining parents who take their children out of school for an annual holiday
  • Clean, safe streets with trees pruned, drains and gullies cleared, roads and pavements repaired

In 2012 we were elected on a manifesto containing 100 pledges. We delivered 99 of them. In 2014 we were re-elected on a manifesto of 50 pledges and we delivered all 50 of them.

Labour has a record of delivery in Plymouth despite the cuts inflicted on our city by the Government, so we are confident that we will deliver on our 2018 manifesto of 100 pledges.
